Huntingdon Valley Dental Arts’ sole purpose is to provide you with a quality dental service, as well as to make you feel comfortable during the process.  We make sure we employ not only the most professional, but also the most people-friendly and positive staff possible.  Barb has become an important part of our team and we asked her a few questions so you can get to know her before you come in for a visit!

What is your role at Huntingdon Valley Dental Arts?

I am lucky to work with a team of professionals that truly believe in what we do everyday!  My role as the office administrator and patient coordinator encompasses many aspects.  My most favorite part is caring for our patients.  Building long and trusting relationships, listening to their concerns, answering their questions and helping them to understand their treatment is extremely satisfying for me.  I’ve been in the dental chair many, many times.  I think that has so much to do with it.  I am also a trained dental assistant.  If the need should arise, I am always happy to assist in the operatory as well.

How has the dental industry evolved since starting at Huntingdon Valley Dental Arts? / What do you think was the best technological advancement in the dental industry over the last decade?

The dental industry evolves every day.  Our office staff regularly attends continuing education courses that keep us informed and updated.  Dr. Makrauer is on faculty at the Kornberg School of Dentistry helping to make a difference with his many years of experience.  He also lectures throughout the year about his passion.  We see cases that would NEVER have achieved the aesthetic results and predictability ten years ago that are being accomplished today.

Why should someone choose Huntingdon Valley Dental Arts over other dental offices?

Huntingdon Valley Dental Arts provides comprehensive care for our patients.  I greet each patient as they arrive and gently try to put them at ease.  Let’s face it, not too many people love coming to the dentist!  Our team has a “morning meeting” everyday.  This allows us to stay on schedule and to discuss any concerns about each patient that we see for that day.  We provide support and individualized care throughout each appointment.  Finally, it’s my turn to again assist our patients with their administrative needs.  They have my undivided attention as I do my part to review their appointment and any further treatment needed as well as the financial aspects of the appointment.  I try to be very proactive with any insurance claims that are applicable as well as alternate financial options available.  It is my hope that their visit begins and ends with a smile!
What are your favorite dental hygiene tips?

I am all about brushing my grandkids teeth!  They are four-year-old twins.  When they stay overnight, we have a ritual.  I brush their teeth first, while they hold a mirror and watch.  Then, they brush them again and I hold the mirror so they can watch themselves brushing.  They love it!  It takes “forever” but it keeps them brushing for a long time and they are learning the proper technique.  I’d say it’s a WIN WIN in my book.

What’s a common misconception about dental care?

One misconception regarding dental care that I run into almost daily is…” Will my insurance cover that?”  Whether it does or does not, insurance should not drive your dental treatment and care.  A cavity is still a cavity whether you have insurance coverage or not.  I happen to think that your dental health is just as important as your general health.  Regular visits should be very high on our list of priorities.
