Here at Huntingdon Valley Dental Arts, we want to make our patients feel at home and not stress out over going to the dentist.  In order to do this, our goal is employ not only the most qualified candidate, but the friendliest as well.  Our dental assistant, Betsy, is a very important part of our team and our practice.  We asked Betsy a handful of questions about herself so our patients can get to know her before they even step into our office!

What drew you to the dental industry?

I always got pleasure out of seeing people’s lives change from having a mouth make-over. I wanted to be there to see the tears of sadness lead to tears of joy. It’s a great feeling to see how you can change someone’s life. It actually brings tears to my eyes. I love watching someone look in the mirror and see them smile the biggest smile ever and turn around and give you a hug. That’s a great day in my book.

What is your role in the office as a dental assistant?

I assist the doctor with his patients.  With some anxious patients, I try and keep there minds off of what he is doing. I listen to what may be going on in there lives and I feed off of that to make conversation. This helps the doctor because it keeps them calm. I do the ordering for supplies for the office. We have a very good system, which makes that part of my job a lot easier to do. I do at times help out with the front desk when Barb gets busy or when she is on vacation.

How does your family-oriented background translate to what you do at Huntingdon Valley Dental arts?

Family has always been important to me. I think of our patients as my family, so I give them the same care as I would my own family. We have patients that have said they love coming here and feeling like family.

What are your favorite dental hygiene tips?

I tell patients I think they should use an electric toothbrush because it works much better than a manual one. They tell me it tickles when the first start using it.  I tell them just to keep at it and that feeling will go away, and they can laugh away the cavities.

What’s a common misconception about dental care?

A lot of patients think of pain when they think of a dentist. That is not necessarily true. We try and comfort our patients and have them understand we are not here to do that. The doctor will give them time to get numb and will stop if at any time they feel something.  More times than not, the doctor does not have to do that. After we are done with the patient, they will comment how they were pain free.
